Created in partnership with Paramount Pictures, this special exhibit highlights the movie about fictional 1970s TV anchor Ron Burgundy, whose top-rated Channel 4 News team rules San Diego until reporter Veronica Corningstone arrives with her sights set on Ron’s anchor chair. The movie, starring Will Ferrell, became a comedy classic and spawned the sequel, “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” opening in theaters nationwide Dec. 20, 2013.
The exhibit also explores the reality behind the film’s humor. Before the arrival of the 24/7 news cycle, local TV anchormen ruled the airwaves and the anchor chair was for men only. But dramatic changes hit local TV news in the 1970s when women stepped up to the anchor desk, and news teams took over. Visitors can see local TV news promotions from the 1970s, along with photos of popular news teams of the day, and learn about the issues that women faced as they tried to achieve equality in the newsroom.
Responsibilities include: concept design, modeling, exhibit graphic design, promotional graphic design and fabrication drawings.
The approach to designing Anchorman: The Exhibit, was to reflect the comedy of the movie visually by using many different bright colors, various patterns and textures in the graphic design as well as designing physical objects (wall structures, artifact cases, etc.) comedically oversized. Back-lit plexiglass graphics and video monitors throughout the space also give a bright and fun feeling to the exhibit. An example of this can be seen in the exhibition's title wall. Ron Burgundy's signature suit is displayed on a back-lit plexiglass graphic and slowly rotating within it's artifact case.
